DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to invite the [IEEE PES President-Elect 2025](
https://ieee-pes.org/news/2025-election-ieee-pes-officers/) candidate\, Pr
of. Edvina Uzunovic from Worcester Polytechnic Institute to give an online
technical talk\, on "AI-Ready Data Centers and their impact on the electr
ical grid" from 16:00-17:00 BST on 24th July 2025.\n\nAbstract:\n\nThe ele
ctric power industry is a regulated and highly capital-intensive sector. T
o provide economically efficient energy services\, utilities design grids
that are just large enough to meet the needs of homes and businesses. Howe
ver\, the rapid expansion of AI-ready data centers—purposely built to su
pport intensive artificial intelligence workloads—is driving a projected
tenfold increase in electricity demand by the end of the decade. This pre
sentation will examine the challenges posed by this unprecedented load gro
wth and highlight how the industry is preparing to manage its impact\, whi
le continuing to deliver reliable\, affordable\, and sustainable energy to
power the global economy.\n\nBio:\n\nDr. Edvina Uzunovic has over 25 year
s of experience in the power systems industry and academia. She has played
a vital role in the success of several U.S.-based utilities and manufactu
rers in the power sector\, serving in a variety of capacities. She is curr
ently an Assistant Teaching Professor and Associate Director of Power Syst
em Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts\, USA.\
n\nDr. Uzunovic earned her B.Sc. from the University of Sarajevo in Bosnia
and Herzegovina\, and her M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engi
neering from the University of Waterloo in Ontario\, Canada.\n\nThroughout
her career\, she has received numerous accolades\, including first place
in the IEEE PES Student Poster Contest (1999)\, the EPRI Innovators Award
(2002)\, the EPRI Technology Award for contributions to FACTS technology\,
and Recognition Awards from the U.S. National Committee of CIGRE for outs
tanding technical papers in 2002 and 2006.\n\nShe is a Senior Member of th
e IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES). From 2016 to 2020\, she served as the
PES Vice President of Education and currently volunteers on several PES c
ommittees and working groups.\n\nThis event is organised by IEEE PES UK&I
Chapter and co-organised by all student branch PES chapters locally. The o
