 renewable energy (VRE) sources\, and distributed energy resources (DER)\, 
 new operational challenges are emerging in electricity grids worldwide. In
  fact\, low-carbon power systems are likely to be much more ‘fragile’ 
 (that is\, sensitive and vulnerable) to various disturbances\, and consequ
 ently more prone to cascading and so\, overall\, less ‘resilient’. In 
 more fragile grids\, it becomes therefore key to be able to provide essent
 ial system services to guarantee stable\, secure and resilient system oper
 ation\, and new operational and market tools may be needed to align econom
 ic and technical requirements.\n\nThis lecture will illustrate key operati
 onal challenges of low-carbon grids\, introduce technical and economic ‘
 first principles’ to design new essential system services\, and discuss 
 potential technical and commercial solutions to deal with the fragility of
  power systems dominated by IBRs\, VRE and DER. A number of major recent e
 vents leading to blackouts or ‘near misses’ in Australia\, UK and the
