 ince the invention of the transistor in 1947 and the integrated circuit in
  1958\, microchips have fueled scientific advancements\, manufacturing inn
 ovations\, and economic growth. Today\, DARPA’s Microsystems Technology 
 Office (MTO) will advance the next generation of microsystems to disrupt t
 he underlying technology\, disrupt current manufacturing\, and create new 
 markets. This requires unique insight to discover fundamentally new ways o
 f creating advanced circuits that will dramatically alter and exceed the c
 urrent state-of-the-art in microsystems. This will involve:\n\n-\nUsing th
 e power of light at the microscale in three dimensions with advanced photo
 nics\;\n\n-\nHarnessing quantum mechanical phenomena for sensors and compu
 ters that break traditional classical limits\;\n\n-\nDeveloping a toolbox 
 of organic and biological molecules and hybrid bioelectronics that will le
 verage living system phenomena and connect back to traditional microsystem
 s\;\n\n-\nAnd advancing technologies for affordable\, rapid\, and sustaina
 ble microsystems fabrication to enable a new domestic manufacturing ecosys
 tem that leverages commercial scaling and drives strong economic growth.\n
