DESCRIPTION:Special Presentation by Ashutosh Dutta\, JHU/ALP\, USA\n\nHoste
d by the IEEE Future Networks Security & Privacy Working Group\n\nDate/Tim
e: Friday\, 18 July 2025 @ 9:00 AM EDT\n\nTopic:\n\nReal-time Security Mon
itoring Detection and Mitigation in 5G Networks\n\nAbstract:\n\nJHU/APL ha
s been building a security and monitoring testbed for the last year that s
erves as a proof of concept of some of the security controls in 5G Standal
one (SA) architecture. This testbed report highlights the results from fou
r different prototypes addressing cybersecurity requirements for mission c
ritical users. This includes generating\, detecting\, and mitigating attac
ks on the control plane (e.g.\, Next-Generation Application Protocol [NGAP
])\, the user plane [General Packet Radio Services (GPRS) Tunnelling Proto
col User Plane (GTP-U)]\, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services (in
cluding Session Initiation Protocol [SIP] and Real-time Transport Protocol
[RTP])\, and service-oriented interfaces within the control plane (e.g.\,
Hypertext Transfer Protocol 2.0 [HTTPv2]). The service providers and ente
rprise providers will find the results and methodologies from these experi
ments useful as they plan to deploy security controls either to fulfill th
e security requirements or further mitigate cyber-attacks on their commerc
ial networks. These security controls and mitigation techniques will help
provide desired quality of service to mission critical users in spite of d
enial-of-service (DoS) attacks. Results from four use cases demonstrate th
at many of the attacks in the control plane and user plane can be mitigate
d if proper security controls are applied.\n\nSpeaker:\n\n[]\n\nAshutosh D
utta brings in a unique blend of industry and academic experience. He is c
urrently Chief 5G Strategist at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physi
cs Labs and serves as associate research professor and the director of Doc
tor of Engineering program at Johns Hopkins University in addition to his
teaching. His past career spanning more than 30 years\, includes Director
of Technology Security and Lead Member of Technical Staff at AT&T\, CTO of
cybersecurity company NIKSUN\, Senior Scientist in Telcordia Research\, D
irector of Central Research Facility at Columbia University\, and Computer
Engineer with TATA Motors. Ashutosh has published more than 110 papers\,
IEEE-Wiley book on Handoff Optimization\, 6 book chapters and has 31 issue
d patents.\n\nAs a Technical Leader in 5G\, Ashutosh has served as the fou
nding Co-Chair for the IEEE Future Networks (https://futurenetworks.ieee.o
rg/)\, IEEE Connecting The Unconnected ([ctu.ieee.org](http://ctu.ieee.org
/)) and IEEE 5G/6G Innovation Testbed ([testbed.ieee.org](http://testbed.i

Lecturer for 2017-2020. He has served in IEEE Communications Society's di
rector of Industry Outreach Board (2014-2019) and has been serving as Memb
er-At-Large (2020-2025). He initiated and organized more than 90 5G Summit
s around the world ([www.5gsummit.org](http://www.5gsummit.org/)) and has
served as founding Co-Chair of IEEE Future Networks World Forum (https://f
nwf2025.ieee.org/) since 2018. Ashutosh has served as Workshop Co-Chair in
ICC and Industry Forum and Exhibits Co-Chair in Globecom. His most notabl
e awards include\, 2022 North American Region Exceptional Service Award\,
2009 IEEE MGA Leadership award\, 2022 IEEE-USA George F. McClure Citation
of Honor\, and IPv6 Hall of Fame in 2024. Ashutosh is a Distinguished Alum
nus of NIT Rourkela with BS in Electrical Engineering\, MS in Computer Sci
ence from NJIT\, and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Columbia Univers
ity under the supervision of Prof. Henning Schulzrinne. Ashutosh is a Fell
ow of IEEE\, Distinguished member of ACM\, Fellow of AAIA\, and Member of
National Academy of Artificial Intelligence. Ashutosh is currently a candi
