DESCRIPTION:Greetings!\n\nSPS\, IEEE Hyderabad Section\, in collaboration w
ith The MathWorks India Private Limited\, Hyderabad\, is organizing a Dist
inguished Industry Lecture on “Phase-Based Time-Frequency Filtering as a
n Alternative to the Classical Beamforming” by Dr. Akihiko K. Sugiyama\,
Dr. Eng.\, Damascus Corporation / Tokyo Metropolitan University\, on 18th
August 2025\, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM at The MathWorks India Private Limi
ted\, Hyderabad.\n\nThe event will also feature an IEEE SPS Chapter Hydera
bad Section Student Branch SPS Faculty Advisors Meet-up.\n\nAbstract\nThis
talk introduces phase-based time-frequency filtering as an alternative to
classical beamforming. In this approach\, classical beamforming is decomp
osed into direction-of-arrival estimation and direction-based attenuation.
Such decomposition frees the design of the directivity pattern from senso
r arrangement constraints\, enabling the creation of sharp beams with a sm
all number of sensors.\n\nAs an example\, audio beamforming for PC applica
tions will be presented\, along with a design technique that achieves a co
nstant beam-width across frequencies in multiple channels. Evaluation resu
lts demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach\, confirming the succes
sful realization of constant beam-width designs.\nSpeaker :Akihiko K. Sugi
 yama\, Dr. Eng. Damas.cus Corporation/Tokyo Metropolitan University\n\nSpe
aker’s Biography\n\nDr. Akihiko K. Sugiyama brings over 40 years of expe
rience in developing telecommunications\, speech\, and audio signal proces
sing systems for both consumer and network products. He has a proven track
record of technology adoption in commercial products and international st
andards\, with numerous publications and granted patents. His career uniqu
ely combines research excellence with marketing and sales expertise—deve
loping over 300 new global contacts in just two years and conducting proof
-of-concept evaluations with world-leading companies for technical licensi
ng.\n\nHe represented Japan in ISO/IEC MPEG Audio standardization\, servin
g as Interim Chair of the Audio Subgroup at the Angra dos Reis Meeting in
Brazil\, and has also contributed to ITU and 3GPP standardizations. Bridgi
ng industry and academia\, Dr. Sugiyama has over 25 years of university te
 aching experience\, supervising 75 internship students.\n\nTo date\, he ha
s delivered 232 invited talks across 101 cities in 31 countries\, and rece
ived 25 awards\, including the prestigious 2024 Industry Innovation Award
from the IEEE Signal Processing Society. He is the sole or co-inventor of
273 registered patents in Japan and abroad.\n\nDr. Sugiyama is a Fellow of
IEEE and an Honorary Member and Fellow of IEICE. He has served as a Disti
nguished Lecturer for the IEEE Signal Processing Society (2014–2015) and
IEEE Consumer Electronics Society (2017–2018)\, as well as a Distinguis
hed Industry Speaker for the IEEE Signal Processing Society (2020–2021).
In 2020\, the IEEE Consumer Electronics Society recognized him as a Renow
ned Distinguished Speaker (“The Rock Star”).\n\nLimited seats availabl
 e. Registration is mandatory and will close at 5:00 PM on 16th August. D
on’t miss this opportunity!\nHappy to connect with you all.[]\n\nAgenda:
