DESCRIPTION:Welcome to IEEE Seminar on “AI Data Centers and Their Impact
on the Electrical Grid” by Prof. Edvina Uzunovic\, Worcester Polytechnic
  Institute\, Massachusetts\, USA\n\nAbstract:\n\nThe electric power busine
ss is a regulated and the most capital-intensive industry. To provide econ
omically efficient energy services\, utilities build grids just big enough
to deliver electricity to homes and businesses. With the rapid build-out
of powerful data centers designed to run AI workloads\, electricity demand
is projected to grow at a tenfold increase rate from current levels throu
gh the end of the decade. This presentation will assess the challenges of
this new load growth\, and highlight how the industry is prepared to addre
ss its impact while continuing delivery of reliable\, affordable\, sustain
able energy and powering the economies of the world.\n\nShort Bio\n\nDr. E
dvina Uzunovic is the Associate Director of Power Systems Engineering and
an Assistant Teaching Professor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute\, Massa
chusetts\, USA. With over 25 years of industry and academic experience\, s
he has led and contributed to numerous innovations in power system. She ho
lds a Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo and has received multiple awar
ds for her technical contributions to FACTS and grid modernization. A seni
or IEEE PES member\, Dr. Uzunovic founded PES University and has served as
Vice President of Education\, Region Representative\, and Scholarship Com
mittee Chair. Her leadership continues to shape workforce development and
lifelong learning across the global power systems community.\n\nMore about
the IEEE PES President Elect Candidacy\n\nDr. Uzunovic’s talk will focu
s on advancing power systems education\, innovation\, and climate resilien
ce in the face of emerging energy challenges. As the founder of PES Univer
sity\, she has championed continuous learning and professional development
across the IEEE PES community. Her vision emphasizes bridging the gap bet
ween industry and academia to foster shared innovation and prepare the wor
kforce for a sustainable energy future. Key focus areas include the integr
ation of nuclear energy—particularly small modular reactors—for high-d
emand AI data centers\, as well as combining nuclear\, hydrogen\, and wate
r-energy initiatives into modern grid strategies. Dr. Uzunovic advocates f
or standards that support emerging technologies while maintaining PES’s
independence\, technical integrity\, and relevance. Her talk will reflect
on her leadership journey\, share insights into fostering a culture of inc
lusive education\, and highlight opportunities for the next generation of
engineers to lead resilient\, decarbonized\, and technically advanced powe
 r systems worldwide.\n\nVirtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/498414
