DESCRIPTION:Electromagnetics catches an eye of many students before their u
ndergraduate studies but at the same time it takes somewhat not-so-friendl
y form very soon in early years of engineering. However\, in reality\, eve
ry branch of electrical and electronics engineering requires knowledge of
electromagnetics.\n\nIn this talk\, we would try to discuss some of the pr
oblems in applied electromagnetics. First of all\, we can try to cover an
interdisciplinary problem where electromagnetics can be used to analyze th
e forces in manufacturing. Accuracy is very important aspect of any manufa
cturing technology. Wire Electric Discharge Machining is a manufacturing m
ethod where cutting takes place due to heat produced by the spark discharg
es between the tool (wire) and the workpiece. We will discuss how the elec
tromagnetic analysis can help to get better understanding of vibrations of
the wire due to Lorentz forces.\n\nSolar photovoltaic installations are i
ncreasing worldwide as the push for the green energy is increasing. Howeve
r\, analysis of electromagnetic compatibility aspects of solar photovoltai
cs is important to make sure that they operate reliably and do not face co
nsequences such as ban on products. We would discuss how the analysis of E
MC issues in photovoltaics can be done.\n\nHigh voltage engineering is rat
her an old branch within electrical engineering. Recently\, it has come to
light again because of HVDC push due to increased renewables like offshor
e wind farms. We would discuss the standards which the HVDC inverters or c
ables need to follow. Further\, the design of shields for the equipment to
be used in HVDC substation would also be discussed\n\nSpeaker(s): Dr. Mak
 arand Kane\, \n\nVirtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/499230
