DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nBill Isenhower\, PhD Civil Engr.\, will give a talk
about the Panama Canal. When the Panama Canal was handed over to Panama o
n December 31\, 1999\, the Panama Canal Company became the Auturidad del C
anal de Panamá (ACP). The ACP has worked to increase the canal’s shippi
ng capacity and to improve its operation. Since its opening in 1912\, the
canal‘s shipping channel has been widened and deepened. Since 2017\, the
canal has operated a third set of larger\, water-preserving locks in addi
tion to the original Panamax locks. The new Neopanamax locks and other imp
rovements have increased the total amount of shipping across the isthmus a
nd has allowed both more ships to pass through the Canal with shorter tran
sit times\, while maintaining the sources of drinking water for the cities
  of central Panama.\n\nSpeaker(s): Bill Isenhower\n\nAgenda: \n7:10 to 715
