 y 8 billion people\, nearly 750 million live in places that have no access
  to an electric grid. In 2010\, IEEE launched a humanitarian initiative ca
 lled IEEE Smart Village (ISV) as part of its 501c3 non-profit mandate to a
 ddress this issue. ISV provides seed grants of USD 25K-200K to entrepreneu
 rs who are building businesses in parts of the world where there is no ele
 ctric grid. The starting point is often solar panels\, which power homes\,
  schools and businesses. I will describe how ISV is structured and funded 
 inside of IEEE and the work of some of the incredible entrepreneurs that I
 SV has supported. And if you are interested in volunteering to work with I
 SV\, I am happy to talk with you.\n\nBio:\n\nDr. Ron Bose is an IEEE Life 
 Senior Member. Earlier in his career\, he was an editor of IEEE Communicat
 ions Magazine and served on ComSoc’s Board of Governors. He is currently
  the Treasurer of IEEE Smart Village\, where he happily supports the disbu
 rsement of funds to deserving entrepreneurs.\n\nHe retired from UT Dallas 
 in 2024\, where he taught since 2013. Prior to UTD\, Ron worked in the tel
 ecom industry\, including Bell Labs\, AT&amp;T\, Arthur Andersen\, Siemens and
  Fujitsu.\n\nRon received his bachelor’s in electrical engineering from 
 the Indian Institute of Technology (Kanpur)\, master’s in systems engine
 ering from Case Western Reserve University and Ph.D. in Operations Researc
 h from the University of Texas at Austin. He and his wife live in Plano.\n
