DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In this lecture\, Dr. Rosei will convey the teachings
for his course on “Survival Skills for Scientists” [1]. This is a gra
duate course designed and developed in Dr. Rosei’s department\, where he
provides guidance and offers mentorship to graduate students and postdoct
oral researchers. The central theme of this presentation is that succeedin
g in Science requires skills (often referred to as ‘soft professional sk
ills’) beyond those needed for Science. The lecture aims at giving basic
guidance and mentoring to young scientists (typically science and enginee
ring undergraduate and first year graduate students). The main topics are:
\n\n- The job market for graduates in science and engineering (industry\,
national labs and academia\; advantages and disadvantages)\n\n- Funding in
modern science\n\n- Publish or perish\; publishing quality papers\, havin
g an impact\n\n- Presenting your work to your peers\n\n- The fundamental l
aws of ‘scientific survival’ (know yourself\, plan ahead\, and play ch
ess)\n\n- Ethics in modern science\n\n- Alternative careers Reference: [1]
