DESCRIPTION:As part of IEEE Day 2025 celebrations\, the IEEE Communications
Society (ComSoc) Student Chapter\, in collaboration with the Department o
f ETE\, Ramaiah Institute of Technology\, successfully organized an immers
ive technical workshop titled “Bits Over Beats: Build Your Own Modem.”
The event aimed to provide students with a practical introduction to digi
tal communication systems\, focusing on how data can be transmitted acoust
ically through sound waves.\n\nHeld on 16th October 2025 at the DES Hi-Tec
h Seminar Hall\, the workshop offered participants a complete hands-on exp
erience\, blending theory with creativity. Under the guidance of Dr. Venka
tesha Muniswamy\, Professor and Head of the Department of ECE at SVIT\, pa
rticipants explored modulation techniques such as FSK (Frequency Shift Key
ing) and PSK (Phase Shift Keying) to transmit binary data via audio. Teams
encoded text into sound using Python\, transmitted it through speakers\,
and decoded it back using microphones and signal processing methods.\n\nTh
e session fostered curiosity and innovation as students experienced firsth
and how communication principles can be applied using simple tools. Intera
ctive demonstrations\, live experiments\, and real-time decoding challenge
s kept participants engaged throughout the event. The hands-on activity pr
ovided valuable exposure to digital signal processing\, data modulation\,
and GUI-based decoding workflows — all made accessible for beginners.\n\
nThe event witnessed active participation from students across various dis
ciplines\, with attendees earning certificates of participation for their
successful modem builds. Bits Over Beats truly embodied the IEEE Day spiri
t by transforming complex communication theories into an engaging\, practi
cal\, and enjoyable learning experience — inspiring future innovators to
  Build\, Transmit\, and Decode the language of technology.[]\n\nAgenda: \n
 A hands-on beginner-friendly workshop guiding participants to design\, bui
ld\, and decode their own acoustic modem while learning real-world communi
cation concepts.\n\nRoom: DES Hi-Tech Seminar Hall\, Bldg: DES BLOCK\, RIT
