DESCRIPTION:A phased array is composed of an array of antenna elements that
are excited individually. Via tuning the phase profile and amplitude prof
ile of the excitations\, a phased array is capable of generating a narrow
electromagnetic beam and steering the beam without any mechanical adjustme
nts. Phased arrays have widespread applications in wireless communication
and radar. The phased array technique may also be employed to transmit pow
er (in contrast to information/signal) wirelessly over long distances (on
the order of meters\, ten meters\, or longer). Nevertheless\, employing ph
ased arrays for wireless power transmission encounters various technical c
hallenges that are typically not present in wireless communication or rada
r applications. As one of the primary challenges\, the well-established fa
r-zone condition is usually not satisfied when a phased array is employed
as a wireless power transmitter. This presentation intends to comprehensiv
ely address the technical complications associated with the near-zone cond
ition when the phased array technique is applied for wireless power transm
ission. Specifically\, a closed-form formulation is derived to estimate th
e electromagnetic radiation as well as the power transmission efficiency w
hen a phased array is employed to transmit wireless power under the condit
ion of near-zone (rather than far-zone).\n\nCo-sponsored by: College of Co
