DESCRIPTION:The STEM Workshop — “IoT Ignite: Spark the Future\,” spon
sored by the IEEE TryEngineering STEM Grant and organized by the IEEE ComS
oc Kerala Chapter was held at Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering
(SCTCE)\, Thiruvananthapuram on 19th & 20th October 2025.\n\nThis two-day
hands-on STEM workshop was designed to introduce school students to the fu
ndamentals of the Internet of Things (IoT) and communication technologies
by engaging them in hands-on Arduino based projects. These projects demons
trated how sensors can be used for data collection and how that data can b
e shared through different communication technologies.\n\nThis initiative\
, conducted by volunteers from the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) Ke
rala Chapter with support from the IEEE TryEngineering STEM Grant\, aimed
to inspire curiosity\, creativity\, and problem-solving skills among pre-u
niversity students\, particularly from underserved communities.\n\nA total
of 40 students from grades 8 and 9 of Govt. Model Higher Secondary School
\, Punnamoodu and Govt. High School\, Pappanamcode and 3 accompanying teac
hers participated actively\, experimenting with IoT setups and learning ho
w smart devices communicate and operate collaboratively. 10 active volunte
ers from IEEE ComSoc KC\, IEEE SCT SB & IEEE ComSoc SCT SBC were also acti
vely engaged in helping students in building IoT prototypes\n\nKey activit
ies included:\n\n- Interactive sessions on IoT fundamentals\, communicatio
n principles\, and Arduino programming.\n- Hands-on experiments involving
sensors\, actuators\, and wireless communication.\n- Student-built IoT pro
totype projects such as:\nMorse Code Translator\nWireless Messaging System
\nWeather Monitoring Station\nSmart Traffic Light\n- Conducted pre and pos
t-assessment tests to evaluate learning outcomes.\n- Feedback and reflecti
on sessions to encourage STEM engagement and teamwork.\n\nThe workshop als
o aligned with TryEngineering’s hands-on learning approach\, utilizing I
EEE educational resources such as “Internet of Things (IoT)” and “Io
T with a Soft Touch”.\n\nPrinted training course material and Arduino ki
ts were handed over to teachers from both schools for continued STEM learn
ing.\n\nThe effectiveness of the program was measured using quantitative a
ssessments from students and qualitative feedback from participants and te
achers.\n\n· Students completed pre-assessment and post-assessment tests
to gauge their understanding of IoT and communication concepts.\n\n- Pre-a
ssessment: Only 40% of students scored above 60%.\n- Post-assessment: 80%
of students scored above 60%\, reflecting a 100% improvement in conceptual
 understanding and problem-solving confidence.\n\n· Teacher feedback: “
This workshop gave our students a rare opportunity to learn technology thr
ough doing. It inspired confidence and teamwork among students as well as
teachers.”\n\n· Participant quotes:\n\n- "I never thought I could buil
d something like this! Now I want to learn more about electronics and codi
ng.”\n- “It was fun to see how communication happens between devices
— I want to be an engineer when I grow up!”\n\nFeedback Highlights\n\n
- 85% of students expressed increased interest in pursuing engineering or
technology-related studies in the future.\n\n· Feedback was overwhelmingl
y positive from both students and teachers\, and this highlights the impac
t of the program and demonstrates how hands-on IoT education can make tech
nology learning accessible\, engaging\, and transformative — especially
for young learners from government schools.\n\nSpeaker(s): Lakshmi V S\, \
n\nAgenda: \n- Interactive sessions on IoT fundamentals\, communication pr
inciples\, and Arduino programming.\n- Hands-on experiments involving sens
ors\, actuators\, and wireless communication.\n- Student-built IoT prototy
pe projects such as:\nMorse Code Translator\nWireless Messaging System\nWe
