DESCRIPTION:As part of an educational tour through Serbia\, a group of 29 s
tudents accompanied by their professor Ioannis Kaissas\, from the Aristotl
e University of Thessaloniki\, Greece\, visited Niš on Tuesday\, October
 14. They were warmly welcomed by the ED/SSCS Serbia and Montenegro Chapter
and IEEE Student Branch Niš\, which organized a rich and engaging progra
m for the occasion. The visit began with guided tours of several laborator
ies at the Faculty of Electronic Engineering\, University of Niš. The stu
dents were divided into three groups\, allowing each group to visit all th
ree laboratories: Laboratory for Microelectronics and Electronic Devices\,
Laboratory for Robotics\, Laboratory for Microgrids and Smart Grids. Foll
owing the lab tours\, a presentation session was held. Prof. Jelena Nikoli
ć introduced the EU-funded project AIDA4Edge. This was followed by the IE
EE SSCS INSPIRE lecture\, delivered by Alex Metreveli\, titled “Electron
ics at the Limit: Designing Devices for the Harshest Environments.” In h
is talk\, Metreveli explored current challenges and innovative solutions f
or designing electronics that can operate under extreme conditions such as
high radiation\, temperature extremes\, and corrosive environments. Speci
al focus was placed on wide-bandgap materials like Silicon Carbide (SiC) a
nd Diamond\, and their applications in space\, nuclear\, and other critica
l domains. Alex Metreveli is a PhD candidate at KTH Royal Institute of Tec
hnology\, Sweden. His research centers on radiation-hard electronics for s
pace and nuclear applications\, with experience spanning from device model
ing to radiation testing using particle accelerators. The session conclude
d with an overview of IEEE Serbia and Montenegro Section activities\, pres
ented by Prof. Zlatica Marinković (Vice Chair) and Prof. Biljana Stošić
(Treasurer). Among other topics\, the students were introduced to the IEE
E Students Project Conference IEEESTEC\, as well as the Women in Engineeri
ng (WIE) initiatives\, which sparked significant interest. In addition to
the organized program\, the Greek students also had the opportunity to att
end sessions of the 34th IEEE International Conference on Microelectronics
  – MIEL\, gaining further insights into current research trends and deve
lopments in the field of microelectronics. Later in the day\, the group vi
sited the Science and Technology Park Niš\, where they toured the electro
nics museum showcasing products once manufactured by the historic Electron
ic Industry Niš. The day concluded with a joint dinner with the participa
nts of the MIEL conference\, promoting further networking and cultural exc
hange. As part of their broader educational journey\, the students also vi
sited AIS TE-TO Pančevo and the Vinča Institute of Nuclear Sciences. Thi
s visit was a valuable opportunity for academic and cultural exchange\, pr
omoting international collaboration and giving students a deeper insight i
 nto Serbia’s academic\, technological\, and industrial landscape.\n\n[A
