DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, December 16\, 2025\, at 6:30 PM ET\, the [IEEE Con
sultants’ Network of Northern New Jersey](https://www.technologyontap.or
g/) will host a presentation on Technical Musings in Pro Audio and Musical
Electronics.\n\nAbout the Topic\n\nThe worlds of professional audio and m
usical electronics often overflow with folklore and myths around gear that
musicians and audio engineers deeply care about. Behind the romance and s
torytelling\, however\, lie circuits with predictable behaviors\, componen
ts that perform in specific ways\, and engineering decisions that shape th
e sound we hear every day. Contrast this with circuit design from other fi
elds\, where performance and acceptance can always be objectively be teste
d and compared against an agreed-upon criteria.\n\nIn this lively and tech
nically grounded presentation\, Jim Julian will explore what really happen
s inside the equipment used by musicians\, recording engineers\, and audio
professionals. Drawing on decades of experience spanning repair work as a
teenager\, and subsequently as a full-time professional working in data c
ommunications\, medical devices\, and quality systems engineering\, Jim wi
ll separate fact from fiction while celebrating the creativity and quirks
that make musical electronics so fascinating.\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\nJame
s "Jim" Julian of Jim Julian Unlimited\, LLC\, graduated from NJIT as an e
lectrical engineer (BSEE). Self-taught in electronics\, he worked professi
onally as an electronic technician at 16 in a local music store\, and cont
inued there through college. Upon graduation\, he started as an electronic
design engineer at RCA Astro Electronics\, designing custom test equipmen
t for communication satellites. He then continued as an analog\, digital\,
and firmware designer\, as well as holding positions in engineering manag
ement\, product management\, and quality engineering at Timeplex\, Datasco
pe\, VitalCom\, GE Healthcare\, and Stryker. His parallel career in qualit
y engineering includes expertise in regulatory requirements for FDA-approv
ed medical devices. He is a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt. In addition to cons
ulting\, he is the founder of Uncool Audio\, a new pro-audio hardware vent
ure\, currently in development. Creatively\, he is a drummer\, and a lead
vocalist. He is also a commercial and fine art photographer and videograph
