 technologies\, such as Artificial Intelligence\, while they are still bein

 n the minds of a science fiction writer? Such prediction would allow us to
  guide development and regulation of technologies before their impacts get
  entrenched. This talk describes ‘science fiction science’ (sci-fi-sci
 )\, the use of experimental methods to simulate future technologies\, and 
 collect quantitative measures of the attitudes and behaviors of participan
 ts assigned to controlled variations of the future. I present various rece
 nt sci-fi-sci projects aimed at anticipating the societal impacts of Artif
 icial Intelligence\, and discuss the potential and limitations of this for
 m of science.\n\nShort Bio of Iyad Rahwan:\n\nProf. Iyad Rahwan is directo
 r of the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin\, where he f
 ounded and directs the Center for Humans &amp; Machines. He is also an honorar
 y professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Technica
 l University of Berlin. Prior to moving to Berlin\, he was an Associate Pr
 ofessor of Media Arts &amp; Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technol
 ogy (MIT). A native of Aleppo\, Syria\, Rahwan holds a PhD from the Univer
 sity of Melbourne\, Australia. Rahwan’s research agenda\, which he calls
  science fiction science\, anticipates the impact of Artificial Intelligen
 ce on the way we think\, learn\, work\, play\, cooperate and govern. His w
 ork appeared in the world’s leading academic journals\, including Scienc
 e and Nature\, and features regularly in media outlets\, including the New
  York Times\, The Economist\, and the Wall Street Journal. His artistic an
 d scientific work was also featured in some of the world’s leading cultu
 ral institutions\, such as Ars Electronica\, Science Museum London and Coo
 per Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum.\n\nShort Bio of Bashar Nuseibeh:\n\n
 Bashar Nuseibeh a Professor of Computing and Head of Software Engineering 
 &amp; Design at The Open University\, UK. He is an Honorary Professor at Unive
 rsity College London (UCL)\, and a Visiting Professor at the National Inst
 itute of Informatics (NII)\, Japan\, and University College Dublin (UCD)\,
  Ireland. Previously he was is a Professor of Software Engineering and Chi
 ef Scientist of Lero\, The Irish Software Research Centre\, and an Associa
 te Professor (Reader) at Imperial College London and Head of of it’s Sof
 tware Engineering Laboratory. Bashar’s software engineering research int
 erests lie at the intersection of requirements engineering\, adaptive syst
 ems\, and security &amp; privacy. In recent years\, he has focused on human an
 d social factors in computing\, working across the disciplinary boundaries
  of software engineering and social psychology\, and publishing in both co
 mmunities and their applications areas\, such as in healthcare &amp; well-bein
 g\, crime &amp; policing\, and sustainability. Bashar was Editor-in-Chief of I
 EEE Transactions on Software Engineering\, ACM Transactions on Autonomous 
 and Adaptive Systems\, and Springer’s Automated Software Engineering Jou
 rnal. He has received many awards for his work\, including the IEEE Comput
 er Society’s Harlan D Mills Award in 2025. He received two European Rese
 arch Council (ERC) grants including an Advanced Grant on Adaptive Security
  and Privacy. He is a Fellow of the UK Royal Academy of Engineering\, the

  Bio of Iyad Rahwan:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;Prof. Iyad Rahwan is director of the
  Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin\, where he founded a
 nd directs the Center for Humans &amp;amp\; Machines. He is also an honorary p
 rofessor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Technical U
 niversity of Berlin. Prior to moving to Berlin\, he was an Associate Profe
 ssor of Media Arts &amp;amp\; Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Techn
 ology (MIT). A native of Aleppo\, Syria\, Rahwan holds a PhD from the Univ
 ersity of Melbourne\, Australia. Rahwan&amp;rsquo\;s research agenda\, which h
 e calls science fiction science\, anticipates the impact of Artificial Int
 elligence on the way we think\, learn\, work\, play\, cooperate and govern
 . His work appeared in the world&amp;rsquo\;s leading academic journals\, incl
 uding Science and Nature\, and features regularly in media outlets\, inclu
 ding the New York Times\, The Economist\, and the Wall Street Journal. His
  artistic and scientific work was also featured in some of the world&amp;rsquo
 \;s leading cultural institutions\, such as Ars Electronica\, Science Muse
 um London and Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum.&lt;/p&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Sho
 rt Bio of Bashar Nuseibeh:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;Bashar Nuseibeh a Professor of
  Computing and Head of Software Engineering &amp;amp\; Design at The Open Univ
 ersity\, UK. He is an Honorary Professor at University College London (UCL
 )\, and a Visiting Professor at the National Institute of Informatics (NII
 )\, Japan\, and University College Dublin (UCD)\, Ireland. Previously he w
 as is a Professor of Software Engineering and Chief Scientist of Lero\, Th
 e Irish Software Research Centre\, and an Associate Professor (Reader) at 
 Imperial College London and Head of of it&amp;rsquo\;s Software Engineering La
 boratory. Bashar&amp;rsquo\;s software engineering research interests lie at t
 he intersection of requirements engineering\, adaptive systems\, and secur
 ity &amp;amp\; privacy. In recent years\, he has focused on human and social f
 actors in computing\, working across the disciplinary boundaries of softwa
 re engineering and social psychology\, and publishing in both communities 
 and their applications areas\, such as in healthcare &amp;amp\; well-being\, c
 rime &amp;amp\; policing\, and sustainability. Bashar was Editor-in-Chief of I
 EEE Transactions on Software Engineering\, ACM Transactions on Autonomous 
 and Adaptive Systems\, and Springer&amp;rsquo\;s Automated Software Engineerin
 g Journal. He has received many awards for his work\, including the IEEE C
 omputer Society&amp;rsquo\;s Harlan D Mills Award in 2025. He received two Eur
 opean Research Council (ERC) grants including an Advanced Grant on Adaptiv
 e Security and Privacy. He is a Fellow of the UK Royal Academy of Engineer
 ing\, the ACM\, IET\, BCS\, ICS\, and is a Member of Academia Europaea and
  the Royal Irish Academy.&lt;/p&gt;
