DESCRIPTION:Seminar by Prof. Alessio Zappone\, IEEE Fellow\n\nTitle: Optimi
 zation techniques for metasurface-based wireless networks\n\nDate: 2 Feb 2
 026 (Monday) 10 am.\n\nVenue: EEE Executive Seminar Rm (S2.2-B2-53) NTU\n\
nHost: Chau Yuen\, EEE NTU\n\nAbstract: With 5G rolled-out\, the attention
of the research community is shifting towards the development of candidat
e technologies for 6G wireless networks. Compared to 5G\, 6G wireless netw
orks will be required to have more stringent performance requirements\, es
pecially as far as energy efficiency is concerned. A major 6G candidate te
chnology is the use of metasurfaces. In this context\, one issue to tackle
is the huge number of design variables to optimize. The talk will address
the use of metasurface technologies for wireless networks\, with focus on
radio resource allocation techniques. Different instances of wireless net
works and uses of metasurfaces will be discussed. Several optimization tec
hniques for metasurface-aided wireless networks will be analyzed\, discuss
ing their complexity and performance.\n\nBiography: Alessio Zappone receiv
ed his Ph.D. from the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio (Cassino\,
Italy) in 2011. From 2012 to 2016 he was with the Dresden University of Te
chnology\, managing the project CEMRIN on energy-efficient resource alloca
tion in wireless networks\, funded by the German research foundation (DFG)
. In 2017 he was the recipient of the H2020 Marie Curie IF BESMART fellows
hip for experienced researchers\, carried out at the LANEAS group of Centr
aleSupelec (Gif-sur-Yvette\, France). Since 2019\, he is a tenured profess
or at the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio.\n\nHis research intere
sts lie in the area of communication theory and signal processing\, with m
ain focus on optimization techniques for resource allocation and energy ef
ficiency maximization. For his research he received the 2021 Marconi Award
\, the 2023 Fred Ellersick Award\, and the 2024 Best Tutorial Paper Award
of the IEEE Communications Society. Alessio currently serves as senior are
a editor for the IEEE Communications Letters and Editor of the IEEE Transa
ctions on Wireless Communications. He has been elevated to IEEE Fellow in
 the 2025 class.\n\nBldg: NTU\, EEE Executive Seminar Rm (S2.2-B2-53) \, Si
