DESCRIPTION:Title: Transforming Marine Science with Machine Learning\n\nSpe
aker: Dr. Zonghua Liu (Robert Gordon University\, UK)\n\nAbstract: Machine
learning (ML)\, a subfield of artificial intelligence (AI)\, is centered
on the development of computational systems that learn patterns and insigh
ts directly from data. Unlike traditional\, rule-based programming\, these
algorithms autonomously improve their performance and accuracy through ex
posure to more information\, effectively "learning" from experience withou
t being explicitly coded for every scenario. The application of machine le
arning is rapidly transforming the field of marine science and technology.
Its ability to process vast\, complex\, and multidimensional datasets mak
es it an indispensable tool for modern marine research. Consequently\, pro
ficiency in ML is no longer just an advantage but is becoming an essential
skill for researchers and professionals aiming to tackle the most pressin
g challenges in oceanography\, ecology\, and resource management. This pre
sentation will illustrate this transformative potential through a series o
f concise case studies. We will explore how ML algorithms are being deploy
ed for critical tasks such as classification\, identification\, segmentati
on\, sizing and measurement.\n\nBiography: Dr. Zonghua Liu is now a Lectur
er in Robotics in the School of Computing\, Engineering and Technology at
the Robert Gordon University. He is a member of IEEE and IET. He is also t
he Secretary of the IEEE OES UKRI Chapter\, and Technical Chair IEEE OES O
CEANS 27 Aberdeen. He received his B.Eng. degree in Applied Physics\, M.SC
. degree in Laser Technology degrees in China\, and Ph.D. degree in Engine
ering in the UK. His current research interests include but are not limite
d to robotics (e.g.\, underwater and medical)\, underwater/medical sensors
\, optical fibre sensors\, computer vision\, machine-learning-based signal
 and image processing\, water/environment quality monitoring\, real-time r
eporting systems using AI and cloud computing. He has much research experi
ence in underwater sensors\, underwater optical imaging and sensing\, and
machine-learning-based image processing. He has a good track record and is
often involved in national/international collaborations (researcher in a
UK-Japan project and an EU project\, Co-I in two Japan projects and a Turi
ng Ecosystem Leadership Award). His work has been highly respected proven
by invitations as a speaker at international conferences/workshops. He has
published 20+ papers in international journals and conference proceedings
 of high reputation.\n\nTime: NST 9:30-11:00AM (UTC 13:00-14:30)\n\nLink:
