DESCRIPTION:Title: Advanced Uncertainty Propagation for Space Situational A
wareness\n\nWhen: 16 March\, Monday\, 5-6 pm\n\nSpeaker: Brandon A. Jones\
, Associate Professor\, The University of Texas at Austin\n\nAbstract:\n\n
Space Situational Awareness (SSA) requires accurate prediction and estimat
ion of a space-object catalog to identify risks to existing missions\, det
ect anomalous events in the space domain\, and ensure a safe environment f
or future operations. This requires an interdisciplinary approach to SSA t
hat leverages astrodynamics\, information fusion\, statistical and data sc
iences\, and other fields of engineering and mathematics. This presentatio
n highlights recent work in computationally efficient\, multi-fidelity unc
ertainty propagation for improved SSA\, which leverages a hierarchy of sat
ellite force models to reduce computation time in probability density func
tion propagation. Such tools may be leveraged for multi-target tracking wi
th >100\,000 space objects\, uncertainty propagation in the potentially ch
aotic dynamics found in cislunar space\, and robust maneuvering target tra
cking with temporally sparse observation data. This talk will also provide
a high-level discussion of other research at UT-Austin\, including the SC
OPE-1 satellite mission to demonstrate terrain-relative navigation technol
ogies using a 3U cube satellite.\n\nBio:\n\nDr. Brandon Jones is an Associ
ate Professor at the University of Texas at Austin in the Department of Ae
rospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics. He and his students conduct
research in space domain awareness\, multi-target filtering and tracking\
, computational methods for orbit state and uncertainty propagation\, and
satellite navigation. Dr. Jones's research and software tools are used as
part of the intra-formation conjunction assessment system for NASA's Magne
tospheric Multi-Scale (MMS) mission. Dr. Jones has previously worked for o
r with the Air Force Research Laboratories\, the NASA Johnson Space Center
\, Goddard Space Flight Center\, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory on rese
arch related to space domain awareness\, uncertainty quantification\, mult
i-fidelity methods\, and robust mission design.\n\nWhere: Online & Room 01
