DESCRIPTION:The reliability and resilience of the transforming resource mix
is more vulnerable to extreme\, widespread\, and long-duration temperatur
es shifts. For example\, there is an increasing reliance on just-in-time d
elivery of natural gas\, wind\, and solar to fuel new generating capacity.
During extreme weather events\, many of these resources may become unavai
lable\, while at the same time\, the ability of transfers to make up the e
nergy deficit is limited. Operations planning and communication with natur
al gas suppliers and pipelines are becoming increasingly important for rel
iable and resilient operation of the bulk power system. Capacity is needed
to ensure both the availability of energy and the essential reliability s
ervices that support the grid.\n\nWith the integration of renewable resour
ces\, it is necessary to manage the uncertainty from variable resources an
d engineer their integration in ways that they provide. enough energy and
sufficient essential reliability services.\n\nThis can be addressed throug
 h:\n\nAdding No/Low Carbon Resources\n\nEnsuring sufficient no/low carbon
energy is built and available to meet decarbonization goals.\n\nBuilding T
ransmission\n\nDeveloping adequate transmission to integrate renewables an
d transmit and distribute energy from resource rich areas to areas with de
 ficits.\n\nProviding Balancing Resources\n\nMaintaining a robust fleet of
balancing resources to support energy delivery alongside renewables.\n\nSt
rengthening Energy Supply Chain\n\nEnsure healthy energy supply chains for
balancing resources\, with sufficient access to stored energy to withstan
d long duration\, widespread extreme weather events.\n\nAt the same time\,
the grid is facing unprecedented demand growth from large loads\, includi
 ng electrification\, data centers\, AI computing\, and crypto-currency fac
ilities. These loads are highly concentrated\, can connect rapidly\, and o
ften have unique operational profiles\, further increasing the need for ca
reful planning and resilient integration of resources.\n\nSpeaker(s): Mark
