DESCRIPTION:This is a joint meeting of Canadian Society of Senior Engineers
and IEEE Life Members Affinity Groups.\n\nThis series of presentations ha
s been occurring for more than 20 years and is now being also advertised t
o the IEEE Northern Canada Section (NCS) Life Members Affinity Group (LMAG
) through vTools and other IEEE LMAG's and IEEE members depending upon the
topic. At the same time the Canadian Society of Senior Engineers (CSSE) i
s using their national organization to provide information\, the subject a
nd speaker to members across Canada.\n\nThe next meeting will be held on T
hursday\, May 21\, 2026. The meeting will open at 12:30 pm MDT (2:30pm Eas
tern)\, with the presentation starting at 12:45 (2:45 pm EDT).\n\nPlease n
ote the meeting originates in Alberta which is in the Mountain Time Zone\,
so if you are in another province you must account any necessary time shi
ft.\n\nPresentation: Hydrogen as a Transportation Fuel\n\nSummary: The use
of hydrogen as a transportation fuel is being actively developed. First\,
a brief background on the transportation sector energy consumption and te
chnologies will be given. Then our research and development on Hydrogen Di
esel Dual Fuel (HDDF) transport trucks will be examined as a transition te
chnology where up to 80% energy replacement of diesel with hydrogen can be
obtained. The HDDF internal combustion engine results will be explained i
n terms of a complex highly constrained engineering problem and put in con
text with current heavy duty transportation trends such as fuel cells and
battery electric powertrains.\n\nPresenter: Bob Koch\n\nC. R. (Bob) Koch r
eceived his B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the University of A
lberta\, Edmonton\, Canada in 1985\, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from S
tanford University\, Palo Alto\, CA\, in 1986 and 1991\, respectively. Fro
m 1991 to 1992 and from 1994 to 2001 he worked at Daimler-Benz/Daimler-Chr
ysler in Stuttgart Germany in powertrain and internal combustion engine co
ntrol. During 1992 to 1994 he worked for General Motors at the powertrain
control center. In 2001\, he joined the Mechanical Engineering Department
of the University of Alberta\, Edmonton Canada\, where he is a Professor.
His research interests include vehicle propulsion systems\, controls\, mac
hine learning control\, sensors for mobile emission measurement and air qu
ality\, mechatronics\, and control of distributed parameter systems. Prof.
Koch is currently an Associate Editor for the Mechatronics Journal (Elsev
ier) and Control Engineering Practice.\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us06w
