DESCRIPTION:Underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) have gained increas
 ing attention for civil and defense applications\, but underwater environm
 ents present major challenges such as dynamic channels\, localization diff
 iculties\, high delays\, limited bandwidth\, energy constraints\, interfer
 ence\, and strong noise.\nThis work presents a comprehensive survey of UWS
 N protocols across the physical\, MAC\, and routing layers\, including exi
 sting network stacks\, underwater modems\, and security threats\, with emp
 hasis on the Smart Adaptive Long- and Short-range Acoustic (SALSA) stack. 
 Based on the identified research gaps\, two main contributions are propose
 d.\nFirst\, Developed-SALSA (D-SALSA) stack protocols are introduced to im
 prove adaptability\, energy efficiency\, throughput\, and communication re
 liability. Second\, a heterogeneous underwater architecture combining acou
 stic and optical communication technologies is presented to support high-r
