DESCRIPTION:A celebration of Vincent Rijmen and Joan Daemen for receiving t
he BBVA Frontiers of Knowledge Award for designing AES\n\nMini-symposium:
 COSIC Origins — Cryptography PhDs 1979 – 1997\n\nWhen? Friday 26th Jun
 e at 17h\nWhere? Departement Elektrotechniek\, Kasteelpark Arenberg 10\, 3
 001 Leuven\, Belgium\n\nAbout the award\n\nWe are proud to announce that P
rofessor Vincent Rijmen (COSIC\, KU Leuven\, Belgium and University of Ber
gen\, Norway) and Professor Joan Daemen (Radboud University\, The Netherla
nds) have been awarded the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in
Information and Communication Technologies. The award recognizes their de
sign of the Rijndael algorithm\, which became the Advanced Encryption Stan
dard (AES) and now secures billions of digital devices worldwide\, includi
 ng websites\, mobile phones\, Wi-Fi networks\, cloud storage\, and financi
al systems.\n\nThe committee highlighted the significance of their work\,
noting that AES has become “an intrinsic part of everyday life” and pr
aising their decision to make the algorithm open-source\, enabling global
 standardization and transparency.\n\nThe algorithm’s design\, based on d
eep mathematical and cryptographic research\, has remained secure\, fast\,
and adaptable for more than 25 years\, underpinning trust in digital comm
unication and commerce worldwide.\n\nRijmen and Daemen’s work illustrate
s the impact of fundamental research on practical technologies that affect
billions of people. AES is now widely taught in computer security courses
\, used in industry standards\, and continues to be analyzed and verified
by the cryptographic community\, ensuring its continued reliability and re
 levance.\n\nAgenda: \nProgram\n\nThe program starts with a mini-symposium\
, followed by a reception to conclude the evening.\n\nThe five speakers al
l obtained their PhDs at COSIC between 1979 and 1997:\n\n- Yvo Desmedt\nAn
alysis of the Security and New Algorithms for Modern Industrial Cryptograp
hy\, 1984\n- Ingrid Verbauwhede\nVLSI Design Methodologies for Application
-Specific Cryptographic and Algebraic Systems\, 1991\n- Bart Preneel\nAnal
ysis and Design of Cryptographic Hash Functions\, 1993\n- Joan Daemen\nCip
her and Hash Function Design. Strategies based on linear and differential
cryptanalysis\, 1995\n- Vincent Rijmen\nCryptanalysis and Design of Iterat
ed Block Ciphers\, 1997\n\nThe symposium will be moderated by Joos Vandewa
