 ies increasingly deploy synchronous condensers to strengthen grids with hi
 gh inverter-based resource penetration\, appropriate protection schemes ar
 e essential.\n\nThe report describes synchronous condenser machine charact
 eristics\, including excitation systems\, rotating inertia\, capability cu
 rves\, and fault current contribution. It addresses how existing generator
 s — hydro\, combustion turbine\, and steam turbine types — may be repu
 rposed as synchronous condensers. Protection schemes are discussed in deta
 il\, distinguishing those essential for synchronous condensers from those 
 developed for synchronous generators that require modification or are unne
 cessary entirely. Key topics include loss of field protection\, negative-\
 nsequence protection\, stator ground fault protection\, and backup protect
 ion. The report also identifies protection functions — such as loss of s
 ynchronism\, inadvertent motoring\, and abnormal frequency — that are ge
