DESCRIPTION:Event-Based Sensing for Space-Based Applications\n\nEvent-based
sensors (EBS) represent a new and exciting way to capture visual data\, a
nd have three key advantages over conventional sensors. First\, by only ge
nerating a signal when the rate of photon arrival at a pixel changes\, eve
nt streams are sparser and easier to process than conventional video strea
ms. Second\, the lack of a frame-wide exposure time enables the capture of
higher dynamic range. Finally\, the microsecond timestamping of events ma
kes EBS a great way to capture fast-moving changes while avoiding motion b
lur. These three advantages make EBS well suited for space applications\,
where much of the scene is unchanging\, the dynamic range is very high\, a
nd where relative orbital motions can be very high. This talk reviews even
t-based sensors and then looks into two space-based applications\, namely
star tracking from an event-based sensor looking out into deep space and t
hen a remote sensing task for vehicle re-identification.\n\nSpeaker(s): Sc
