DESCRIPTION:The Panel discussion was organized by the PES Chapter in coordi
nation with the GOLD Affinity Group and MJCET. The panel was chaired by th
e honourable Prof. V.G.K Murti\, Rtd Professor\, IIT Madras. The other pan
elists were Er. Krishna Kumar [Addl. General Manager\, NTPS]\, Dr. M. Rama
moorthy [Former Director\, ERDA] and Dr. Krishna V. Prasad [Head\, TCS Pow
er Initiatives]. Prof. Kaleem Fatima MJCET-IEEE Branch counselor [Head Dep
t of ECE]\, introduced the panelists and welcomed the gathering. The panel
ists were welcomed to the dais and introduced by Mr. Sreekumar\, Prayas En
ergy [Vice Chair\, IEEE PES Hyderabad]. He spoke on the challenges in deve
lopment of the power sector in India supported by the statistics on genera
tion in India. Dr. Basheer Ahmed\, Principal MJCET addressed the gathering
and highlighted the achievements of MJCET and the IEEE branch. Session 1
The first panelist and the panel chair was Prof. V. G. K. Murti\, Retired
Professor and Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering\, IIT Chenn
ai. Prof. Murti gave an overview of the latest technology and organization
structure in power engineering. He emphasized on the power sector and its
perennial importance and how it is poised for vigorous growth. The availa
bility of careers in organizations with diverse functions (Power systems\,
Industry\, Academic and R&D Institutes\, Regulatory and Planning bodies)
were discussed. He mentioned the power industry can cater to different tas
tes and aptitudes\, provide scope for using different skills (e.g. Softwar
e\, optimization techniques\, financial management) and specialization in
different sub-areas (e.g. Drives and machinery\, Control and instrumentati
on\, Power System operation). He spoke on the recent developments in the p
ower sector. Prof. V. G. K. Murti has 40 years of teaching and research ex
perience in Networks and Measurements. Prof. Murti received the B.E. degre
e in Electrical Engineering from the University of Madras in 1953\, the M.
Eng. Degree form Yale University\, New Haven in 1957 and the PhD degree f
orm the University of Illinois\, Urbana in 1960. He is the author of many
books. His teaching experience and research experience in networks and mea
surements enriched the students and the faculty present in the gathering.
Session 2 Er. V. R. Krishnakumar is presently working as the Addl. General
Manager (Operation Services) in NTPC Ltd at its Southern Region Head Quar
ters\, Secunderabad. He spoke about the core electrical engineering sector
\, the power sector scenario in India and the emerging trends and technolo
gies. He gave some important facts and figures about the national grid\, t
he EHV transmission lines and gas insulated substations. The protective de
vices like numerical relays were discussed. He also spoke on the concepts
of networked protection. Then information was decimated on the maxDNA Syst
em Architecture and the PADO (Performance Analysis\, Diagnostic and Optimi
zation). Participants gained knowledge about the smart monitoring system a
nd monitoring and were able to get a view of the same through his presenta
tion. Er. V. R. Krishnakumar joined the NTPC Ltd.\, in 1982 and has served
various Thermal and Gas Power stations of NTPC like Ramagundam\, Anta\, G
andhar\, Kayamkulam in Operation\, Commissioning and Maintenance areas. He
graduated from CIT\, Coimbatore in Mechanical Engineering [1972 ] and com
pleted his M.Sc (Engg) from PSG Tech [1974]. Session 3 Dr. M Ramamoorty is
a Fellow of IEEE. He enlightened the gathering on the status of research
in academic institutions\, research centers like CPRI and the actual meani
ng of R&D sector in the industry. He motivated the faculty and the partici
patns present to take up research and prove their worth. Dr. M Ramamoorty
is the former Director of ERDA (Vadodara) and the first Director General o
f Central Power Research Institute\, Bangalore. He was the Chief of R&D at
Hindustan Brown Boveri\, Baroda\, Professor of Electrical Engineering at
the IIT-Kanpur\, and visiting Professor at the University of Waterloo and
Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Dr. Ramamoorty obtained his BE (Hons) fro
m Andhra University in 1957 and ME from IISc Bangalore in 1959. He obtaine
d his MASc and PhD from Toronto University in 1965 and 1967 respectively.
Session 4 Dr. Krishna spoke on Indian power industry evolution\, technolog
ies in the power sector and what to look forward to. He highlighted the sm
art grid\, application functions in the market era\, the modern grid\, pow
er sector stake holders and the latest market trends. He also stressed on
the technologies in the power sector like Information Technologies (IT)\,
Operation Technologies (OT) and Energy Technologies (ET). He provided an o
verview of “As-Is” IT Landscape in an Indian RLDC. In the end
he spoke about what the GenNext Power System would look like. Dr. Krishna
V Prasad heads Head - Power Initiatives\, TCS Bangalore working on the app
lication of IT in power. He has a B.E. in Electrical Engineering from Bang
alore University\, an M.E. in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute
of Science\, Bangalore\, and his Master of Science and Doctor of Science
from the Washington University in St. Louis\, Missouri\, USA. Dr. Krishna
has earlier worked with Control Data Corporation's Energy Management Syste
ms Division\, USA\; Kema consulting (formerly ECC\, Inc.)\, USA\; Best & C
