DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we review sample results based on our recent wor
 k in the areas of machine learning\nover networks and edge intellligence. 
 In particular\, we touch upon our work on communication-efficient federate
 d learning and its applications.\n\nIn the first part of the talk\, we she
 d light on topics pertaining to federated learning. First\, we overview a 
 second-order federated learning algorithm\, coined Fed-Sophia\, with commu
 nication and computation efficiency merits. Next\, we introduce our recent
  work on second order state synchronization (SOSS) to address the limitati
 ons of Fed-Sophia with non-IID data. Afterwards we overview MIRA which pro
 poses a novel approach of federated multi-task learning for fine-tuning LL
 Ms.\n\nIn the second part of the talk\, we shift focus to edge intelligenc
 e applications in digital health with particular focus on CVD prediction. 
 Finally\, we present our work on architecting\, designing and demonstratin
 g a system prototype for multi-tier intelligence for IoT.\n\nSpeaker:\n\nT
 amer ElBatt joined the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE
 ) at The American University in Cairo (AUC) as an associate professor in J
 uly 2017. He received his BSc and MSc degrees in Electronics and Communica
 tions Engineering (ECE) from Cairo University\, Egypt in 1993 and 1996\, r
 espectively\, and his PhD degree in ECE from the University of Maryland\, 
 College Park\, USA\, in 2000.\n\nFrom 2000 to 2009\, he was with HRL Labs\
 , United States\, Argon ST (now part of The Boeing Company)\, United State
 s\, and Lockheed Martin ATC\, the United States at various positions. From
  2009 to 2017\, he was with the EECE Department\, Cairo University\, as an
  assistant professor and later as an associate professor (currently on lea
 ve). He held a joint appointment with Nile University\, Egypt\, from 2009 
 to 2017 and served as the director of the wireless center (WINC) from 2012
  to 2017. In Fall 2019\, ElBatt had been promoted to professor. His resear
 ch has been supported by NTRA\, ITIDA\, QNRF\, FP7\, H2020\, GM\, Microsof
 t\, Google\, Vodafone Foundation\, and DARPA and is currently supported by
  the NTRA\, ITIDA\, and ASRT. He has published 130 publications and holds 
 seven issued US patents and one WIPO patent.\n\nHe was a visiting professo
 r at Politecnico di Torino\, Italy\, Sabanci University\, Turkey and Unive
 rsity of Padova\, Italy. He is the recipient of the 2014 Egypt’s state i
 ncentive award in Engineering Sciences\, the 2012 Cairo University incenti
 ve award in Engineering Sciences and the Google faculty research award in 
 2011. His research interests lie in the broad areas of performance analysi
 s\, design and optimization of wireless\, mobile and IoT networks.\n\nRoom
