DESCRIPTION:Come join fellow IEEE section members at 6 PM Thursday\, Oct 22
at the Oak Room in downtown Knoxville\, TN for food\, drink and a talk by
ORNL quantum researcher Muneer Alshowkan. The talk is entitled “Reconfi
gurable and Resilient Entanglement Distribution in Software-Defined Flex-G
rid Quantum Networks”. We will also provide updates on upcoming plans fo
r the section in 2027 and opportunities to get involved.\n\nPlease RSVP if
you plan to attend so we have a ballpark head count.\n\nDr. Muneer is a R
esearch Scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)\, where he speci
alizes in quantum networking and communications. Previously\, he served as
an Assistant Professor of Computer Science with a dual focus on quantum t
echnologies and cybersecurity. Dr. Muneer holds a Ph.D. in Computer Scienc
e and Engineering from the University of Bridgeport and an M.S. from the N
ew York Institute of Technology.\n\nTalk Abstract: Entanglement distributi
on is the backbone for emerging quantum applications\, including dis- trib
uted quantum computing\, enhanced sensing\, and private communications. Th
e development of quantum networking requires architectures capable of dyna
mically allocating entanglement re- sources to meet diverse user needs and
ensure resilience against transmission disruptions. Current quantum netwo
rks often face limitations in scalability and flexibility due to their rel
iance on fixed spectral assignments and static connectivity. To address th
ese limitations\, we discuss flex-grid quantum networks that adapt advance
d bandwidth management techniques from classical light- wave communication
s for on-demand\, reconfigurable entanglement distribution. In this talk\,
we present our progress in developing flex-grid quantum networking at Oak
Ridge National Laboratory. We describe ultra-broadband entangled photon s
ources designed for adaptive spectral routing and allocation\, enabling en
tanglement distribution with bandwidth tailored to user needs. We then dis
cuss deploying these techniques in a software-defined quantum network inte
grating quantum and classical channels and control planes\, distributing e
ntanglement across multiple nodes in separate buildings while demonstratin
g multihop connectivity and link recovery to maintain service continuity d
espite link failures. Additionally\, we examine spectral contention betwee
n independent entangled sources sharing wavelength channels and strategies
for mitigating its impact on network performance. This work paves the way
for future scalable\, resilient\, and resource-efficient quantum networki
ng infrastructures.\n\nSpeaker(s): Muneer\n\nAgenda: \nWhile there\, we ha
d a short ExCom meeting. Action items included:\n\nApproved to be Silver S
ponsor for East TN Science Bowl. They are also looking for volunteers.\n\n
Discussed plans for 2027 - aiming for event each month - mix of technical
& social\n\nDiscussed R3 event for April\n\nConfirmed that election is on
track.\n\n102 W Anderson Ave\, Knoxville\, Tennessee\, United States\, 379
