DESCRIPTION:The solid-state transformer (SST) is emerging as a potential al
ternative to the conventional line-frequency transformer (LFT)\, offering
advanced power-electronic capabilities in addition to voltage transformati
on and isolation. As distribution networks evolve toward bidirectional pow
er flow\, higher DER penetration\, transportation electrification\, and in
creasing DC loads\, SSTs are receiving growing attention as a potential bu
ilding block for future power systems.\n\nThis webinar will provide an ove
rview of SST technology\, from its fundamental power-electronic building b
locks and major topologies to control strategies and system-level applicat
ions. It will examine applications in distribution networks\, renewable en
ergy and storage integration\, EV fast charging\, transportation and shipb
oard systems\, data centres\, and hybrid AC/DC microgrids. The session wil
l also discuss the key advantages and limitations of SSTs\, including volt
 age regulation\, reactive-power support\, DC interfaces\, efficiency\, rel
 iability\, protection\, cost\, standardization\, and utility acceptance. R
epresentative demonstrations\, commercial developments\, and open research
directions will also be highlighted.\n\nThe session will feature Nasrin E
inabadi\, IEEE Member and Ph.D. candidate in Electrical and Computer Engin
eering (Power and Energy Systems) at the University of Waterloo. Her resea
rch focuses on solid-state transformers\, power-electronic converter model
 ling and control\, small-signal stability of multi-converter systems\, and
hybrid AC/DC power systems.\n\nThe webinar is intended for students\, pra
 cticing power-system and power-electronics engineers\, utility planners\,
researchers\, and professionals interested in next-generation power system
s.\n\nTopics to Be Covered\n\n- Limitations of conventional transformers i
 n modern power systems\n\n- SST fundamentals\, architectures\, and major t
opologies\n\n- Advanced capabilities enabled by power electronics\n\n- Wid
e-bandgap devices and medium-frequency transformer technology\n\n- SST con
