DESCRIPTION:Data Science Foundations & Applied Capstone is a full-day\, han
ds-on workshop designed to introduce participants to the foundations of mo
dern data science through practical exercises and collaborative problem so
lving.\n\nParticipants will work with real-world datasets and gain experie
nce across several stages of the data science workflow\, including data pr
eparation\, exploratory statistics\, data visualizations\, and application
s of data science.\n\nThe afternoon will transition from guided instructio
n to an applied capstone activity. Participants will work in small teams t
o analyze a provided dataset\, identify meaningful trends\, anomalies\, or
insights\, and develop a data-backed recommendation. Teams will have flex
ibility in choosing their approach\, including statistical analysis\, inte
ractive visualization\, or AI-assisted analysis. Instructors will be avail
able throughout the session to provide technical guidance and help teams r
efine their approach.\n\nThe workshop will conclude with short project sho
wcases\, allowing teams to present their analytical approach\, key finding
s\, and recommendations to fellow participants.\n\nThis workshop is intend
ed for participants who are interested in developing practical data scienc
e skills. Prior advanced experience in data science or artificial intellig
ence is not required.\n\nWhat to Bring: Please bring a laptop and charger
and arrive a few minutes early for setup.\n\nOrganized by IEEE NJ Coast Yo
ung Professionals. Sponsored by IEEE Young Professionals and the IEEE Foun
dation.\n\n[]\n\nAgenda: \n8:30 AM – 9:00 AM | Registration & Networking
\nJoin us at Memorial Hall in room M338 prior to the event kickoff for cof
fee\, networking\, and registration.\n\n9:00 AM – 10:00 AM | Welcome & K
eynote\nWelcome remarks\, overview of the workshop\, and setup of the codi
ng environment and workshop resources. Participants will be guided through
accessing the tools and notebooks required for the day's activities.\n\n1
0:00 AM – 11:00 AM | Module 1: Data and Analytics Foundations\nIntroduct
ion to working with real-world tabular data using Python and Pandas. Parti
cipants will explore data loading\, cleaning\, handling missing or malform
ed data\, and basic descriptive statistics. The exercises will use the NYC
Energy and Water dataset as an example.\n\n11:00 AM – 12:00 PM | Module
2: Data Preparation\nParticipants will explore the importance of data pre
processing in-depth by encountering specific scenarios with malformed data
. The exercises will use a fictional student survey dataset with data qual
ity issues commonly found in the real world.\n\n12:00 PM – 1:00 PM | Mod
ule 3: Data Science in Practice\nThis session covers an accessible introdu
ction to how data science practitioners approach new problems in everyday
life.\n\n1:00 PM – 2:00 PM | Lunch & Networking\nLunch and an informal n
etworking session. Participants will have an opportunity to interact with
instructors and discuss data science career paths\, research opportunities
\, and real-world applications of data science.\n\n2:00 PM – 3:00 PM | M
odule 4: Applications of Data Science\nParticipants will learn about commo
n applications for data science methodologies by engaging with real-world
case studies. Participants will also explore various career journeys in th
e field of data science.\n\n3:00 PM – 3:45 PM | Applied Capstone Finding
s\nTeams will be exercising their newly acquired skills to identify a mean
ingful trend\, anomaly\, or insight and develop a data-backed recommendati
on.\n\n3:45 PM – 4:00 PM | Wrap-Up\nClosing discussion\, key takeaways\,
resource sharing\, and information for continued learning.\n\nRoom: M338\
