DESCRIPTION:Titre : When Science Goes Viral: Informal Online Debate\, Disin
formation\, and the Role of AI\n\npar Konstantin Todorov (LIRMM\, Universi
té de Montpellier)\n\nRésumé : Scientific claims and informal discussi
ons about science-related issues have proliferated across online platforms
\, where they are increasingly mobilized within manipulative narratives an
d disinformation campaigns. How\, why\, and when do people invoke science
in online debates\; what intended or unintended effects do these practices
produce? In this talk\, I consider these questions through the lens of ho
w scientific discourse is used—or instrumentalized—to legitimize misle
ading information and to insert potentially harmful narratives in social m
edia. I then explore how artificial intelligence\, and in particular trans
former-based language models\, can contribute to identifying and counterin
g such dynamics\, rather than amplifying them. I conclude by turning to th
e role of emotions and affective language in scientific disinformation\, a
nd by discussing the challenges that emotionally charged discourse poses f
 or current state-of-the-art models.\n\nCo-sponsored by: Séminaires LFI\,
