DESCRIPTION:IEEE Poland Section and CASS Chapter Seminar AGH UST\, Room 429
/C2 \, 20th April\, 2012\, 11.00-12.00 Semiconductor Industry Trends\, Cha
llenges & Opportunities Dr. Rakesh Kumar President & CEO\, TCX Technology
Connexions President\, IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society Abstract Phenomen
al growth in the use of mobile wireless products is fueling a resurgence o
f excitement in the semiconductor industry. Inspite of increasing investme
nt costs and predictions of doom and gloom a few years back\, these are ex
citing times in the semiconductor innovation pipeline. After providing a b
rief background and status of the semiconductor industry and its recent dr
ivers\, this seminar will offer a discussion of the important challenges a
nd opportunities. The industry’s use of collaborative research and
development\, and the fabless Integrated Circuits models will be discussed
. While there are over 1300 fabless Integrated Circuit companies worldwide
\, and over 20% of the worldwide semiconductor revenue now comes from fabl
ess companies the success rate of new startups remains relatively low. Usi
ng the fabless IC startup learnings as a base\, this presentation will off
er hope for entrepreneurial researchers\, and designers in fulfilling thei
r dreams. The author's recently published book\, "Fabless Semiconductor Im
plementation"\, McGraw Hill\, will serve as a reference text. Biography Dr
. Rakesh Kumar is President and CEO of Technology Connexions (TCX Inc.)\,
a services company which provides management\, business and technical 'bri
dging the gaps' consulting in advanced semiconductor technology\, and virt
ual operations areas. The TCX client list includes many emerging companies
as well as top 10 semiconductor companies\, Intel and Qualcomm.. During 3
8 years in the semiconductor industry Dr. Kumar has held various technical
and executive positions. He was VP & GM of the worldwide Silicon Technolo
gy Services business unit at Cadence Design Systems and Tality. At Unisys
and Motorola he made technical and management contributions. Dr. Kumar has
authored the book "Fabless Semiconductor Implementation"\, published by M
cGraw Hill in 2008. He has also authored numerous publications and patents
. Dr. Kumar is a Fellow of the IEEE\, and the President of IEEE’s S
olid-State Circuits Society. Dr. Kumar is a Distinguished Lecturer of the
IEEE Electron Devices and Solid-State Circuits Societies. He has chaired a
nd served on the Steering and Program committees of the IEEE CICC (Custom
IC Conference) for fourteen years. He received his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees
in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rochester in 1974 and 197
1 respectively. He received his B.Tech. degree in Electrical Engineering f
rom the Indian Institute of Technology\, New Delhi in 1969. Dr. Kumar rece
