Abstract: Static VAR Compensators (SVC) are electrical devices for providing fast-acting reactive power on electricity transmission networks.

Biography: A. S. (Ben) Mehraban BSEE-MSEE-MBA, IEEE SM, Manager, Transmission Technical Delivery. Ben joined AEP in 1980, he is a Principal Engineer in the AEP Transmission Asset Management Department. He has 30 years of experience in engineering, design, construction, maintenance, and commissioning of HV-EHV, GIS/GITL, HVDC, FACTS, TCSC, Series Capacitors, HTS cable, Custom Power, and VFT projects. He is currently the technical project coordinator for the implementation of AEP technology projects with emphasis on innovative technologies. He has authored and presented numerous IEEE and CIGRE papers, including IEEE Voltage Sourced Converter Guidelines. He has received several awards and reconditions, including EPRI’s FACTS innovator award and the DOE’s innovative award for application of the HTS cable. He has consulted on behalf of AEP in the US and China. He is a senior IEEE member and the Chair of HVDC-FACTS Subcommittee and several IEEE PES Working Groups.
