Group Feedback Protocols for UAV Swarming Applications
Abstract:
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) are a deeply disruptive technology with applications spanning several industries. In addition to the primary envisaged applications such as parcel delivery, agriculture, oil & gas inspection, and surveillance, new use cases where a network/swarm of UAV cooperate to accomplish a mission are being envisioned. With the goal of embracing the evolving perspective on UAVs to multitude of applications, a primary challenge that needs to be addressed, is to provide reliable communications for enabling Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations. With cellular communications being a natural choice for providing pervasive, and reliable communication for UAV, 3GPP standards body has recently addressed the challenges for ensuring coexistence of UAV with terrestrial cellular users as apart of LTE Release-15. A logical next step would be to develop forward looking technologies for integrating UAVs as a part of 5G. We briefly overview the challenges in integrating UAV as part of terrestrial cellular systems, and propose a new group feedback protocol to enable efficient UAV communications.

Dr. Anantharaman Balasubramanian of InterDigital
Biography:
Dr. Anantharaman Balasubramanian is a Senior Staff Engineer at Interdigital Labs where he conducts research on wireless communications for next generation technologies. His current research interests are in enabling reliable & efficient communications for air-borne, space-borne vehicles, and passive IoT devices. In the past he has worked on Quality of Experience for video communications, and signal processing aspects of audio & video compression. He received his PhD from the Texas A&M University. He is the author/co-author of numerous journal, conference papers and patents.
