The mission of the DU2SRI is to promote knowledge, education, research and development in unmanned systems, contributing to: the advancement of higher education; benefiting students, researchers, scientists, engineers and practitioners; advancing the state-of-the-art in unmanned systems. Current projects include: characterization of wall, ground and ceiling effect in small-scale multi-rotor systems; development of a Software-Defined Radio radar testbed for UAV detection, identification and avoidance; collaborative manipulation of objects by robot teams; creation of a robust autopilot framework for use with platform that exhibit aerodynamic uncertainty, among others.

Biography:

Dr. Kimon Valavanis, John Evans Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

Dr. Valavanis' research interests span the areas of intelligent control, robotics and automation, and distributed intelligent systems, focusing on: integrated control and diagnostics of unmanned systems; modeling and formation control of cooperative robot teams; navigation/control of unmanned aerial vehicles; modeling, design and development of complex mechatronic systems; design of the next generation of unmanned systems; mathematical theories for intelligent machines. He is Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Senior Member of IEEE, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Intelligent and Robotic Systems (Springer), and Fulbright Scholar.

Dr. Matthew Rutherford, of University of Denver

Biography:

Dr. Rutherford's research activities revolve around aspects of software system engineering and security for mobile, embedded, distributed, and parallel systems. He has published in the areas of unmanned / autonomous systems, software testing, cyber-physical systems, distributed stream processing, software engineering, distributed systems, content-based networking, model-driven development, generative programming and software configuration management. Dr. Rutherford's research projects are informed and applied to many of the collaborative, cross-disciplinary groups he is associated with. Currently, Dr. Rutherford is the Associate Director of (DU2SL) the DU Unmanned Systems Laboratory.
