International Seminar on Launching and Maintaining a Successful Career in Science, Engineering and Technology
Scientists and engineers create a world that has never existed before and they continue to perfect it. They create more jobs, GDP and prosperity. Although there are enormously more entrepreneurship and employment opportunities in the global village we live today, there are increasingly more challenges and hardship this community faces. They do the job so well and efficiently that in the process their own half-life in the field of their specialty has reduced significantly. No degree can guarantee a lifetime employmentanymore. In the first part of the talk, I’ll share strategies and my experience for empowering ourselves for a life-time employability and successful career.
In the second part of the talk, emerging technologies and opportunities in Photonics, smart cities and renewable energies,ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) will be discussed. In particular, ultra- broadband access (both wired and wireless) technologies will be presented.

Biography:
Since 2011, Dr. Naresh Chand is with US R&D Center of Huawei Technologies in NJ where he is working on developing low-cost advanced technologies for Ultra Broadband Optical Access Networks. Prior to this, he worked for BAE Systems (2003-11), Agere Systems and AT&T/Lucent Bell Laboratories (1986-2003), and Dept of Electronics, Government of India (1974-79). His areas of research include optical communication systems, fiber-to-the-home, RF over fiber, first non-hermetic 1300-1500 nm InP communication lasers, reliable high power 980 nm InGaAs/GaAs edge emitting lasers, first coherently coupled 850nm VCSEL arrays, HBTs, HEMTs, QWIPs, GaAs/Si and AlGaAs/GaAs MBE. He has several firsts and world records to his credit. He has authored > 180 research papers that include 4 book chapters and 15 patents (issued).
He did his M.Sc. (Tech) in 1974 from BITS, Pilani. On a British Commonwealth Scholarship, he did his M. Eng. (1980) and Ph.D. (1983) in EE from the University of Sheffield, UK. He also did 2 years post-doctoral research at the University of Illinois, Urbana, IL. As a UNDP expert on the TOKTEN project,he supported SAMEER, TIFR, CEERI, SSPL, and DOE in 1995-96. Recently, he was elected to the Board of Education in his town Warren, NJ where his emphasis will be enhancing the STEM education and school ratings.
Dr. Chand is a Life Fellow of IEEE, Associate Vice President, Chapter Relations of the IEEE Photonics Society, and the Chair, Photonics Society, North Jersey Chapter. During 2011-12, he was the Chair, IEEE North Jersey Section. As a result of introducing his best practices, his Section was declared as the best large Section of IEEE in the world in 2013.
