Electric grids around the world are seeing rapid changes in generation resource mix with increasing amounts of renewable generation such as wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) power plants. In response to a series of generation loss events related to PV power plants, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) formed the Inverter-Based Resource Performance Task Force (IRPTF) in 2017. The IRPTF recognized that that there were no specific standards or guidelines for inverter-based resources connected to the North American Bulk Power System (BPS) at transmission levels, and in response, released the BPS-Connected Inverter-Based Resource Performance Reliability Guideline (guideline) in September 2018. This presentation will first describe NERC and its role in maintaining the integrity of the BPS. This will be followed by an overview of the guideline and details of the recommended performance specifications. The final portion of the presentation will describe the process by which the guideline will become enforceable and other current efforts towards forming standards for transmission connected inverter-based generation resources.

Siddharth Pant of GE Power Conversion

Biography:

Siddharth Pant is currently North American Solar Engineering Leader at GE Power Conversion in Cranberry Township. With a BSME from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, India, an MSME (Systems Engineering) from the State University of New York at Buffalo and an MSEE from Johns Hopkins University, Siddharth has over 35 years’ experience in the design and application of high power solid state power converters.

Siddharth started his career in 1982 in the team developing large LCI drives in the Development Department of the Power Electronics and Drive Systems division of Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Buffalo. He moved to Pittsburgh with Westinghouse in 1987 and continued with the design and development of ac and dc drives.

Starting in 1989, the drives business of Westinghouse went through a series of acquisitions by AEG, Cegelec, Alstom and Converteam, and was finally acquired by GE in 2011. During this period, Siddharth worked in different technical and managerial roles, all related to power conversion and drive/inverter design and applications. For the past eight years, Siddharth has been involved in the design, development and deployment of large multi-megawatt central inverters for utility scale solar photovoltaic power plants.

Siddharth is a member of the NERC Inverter-Based Resource Performance Task Force (IRPTF) and is a primary contributor to the NERC BPS-Connected Inverter-Based Resource Performance Guideline. Siddharth has been a member of IEEE for the past 31 years.
