VTS: Swiss Railways
Swiss Federal Railways or Schweizerische Bundesbahnen (SBB) in German, is the national railway company of Switzerland. In 2017, the SBB was ranked highest in the European Railway Performance Index for its intensity of use, quality of service, and strong safety rating. While most European rail operators have emphasized the building of high-speed rail, SBB has heavily invested in the reliability and quality of service of its conventional rail network. It serves 1.25 million passengers a day on less than 2,000 miles of track. The SBB is 100% electrified with the majority of the power generated in its own hydro stations. In 2016, the SBB opened the Gothard Base Tunnel. At 35 miles in length it is the longest rail tunnel in the world.
Our speaker will illustrate his presentation on the SBB passenger service with pictures from a recent tour of Switzerland.
