Switched-Capacitor Power Circuits: Coming of Age

ince its first engineering design in 1930’s, the switched-capacitor circuits had been limited, until recently, to low power applications or high-voltage/low-current designs. Recent efforts have led to significant progress. The switched-capacitor power conversion circuits have been coming of age. Some of its variants achieved unprecedented performances in efficiency and power density. We will review a few basic circuits first to highlight operations. A few circuits are then presented to outline its technology evolution to the resonant switched-capacitor techniques. Several examples and prototypes are then presented. New circuits with projected unique benefits and record achievable performances are also presented.

Biography:
Dr. Tan is NGAS Distinguished Engineer and Power Products Manager. He earned his Ph.D. degree from Caltech and is IEEE Fellow since 2007.
Well-recognized as an authority in near adiabatic power conversion and energy systems, he has pioneered breakthrough innovations with high-impact industry firsts and record performances. His technologies have attracted significant customer funding and led to four product lines for the company with hundreds of designs and thousands of flight hardware “that significantly enhancing national security.” He has given more than 50 keynotes and invited talks. He serves frequently on national and international funding review/prestigious position selection committees.
