Monday, May 13, 2019
IEEE Consultants’ Network of San Diego
Topic: “Visualizing sustainable solutions to solve problems quicker"
Speakers: Peter Meisen
- How do we provide a decent quality of life for all in an environmentally sustainable manner?
- Linking renewable energy resources around the world remains our highest global priority. i.e. using high-voltage transmission between regions and nations to tap abundant and remote renewable capacity
- Global trends are outpacing our ability to solve them (Scientists 2nd Warning to Humanity, 2017) We seem to be smarter lemmings still headed for the cliff
- Why can’t engineers, scientists and policy-makers solve them? What’s missing?
- Visualizing sustainable solutions to global and local problems so we make informed choices quicker.
- We have control rooms for space, war and business – why not for sustainable development?
Speaker Bio:
Mr. Peter Meisen of Global Energy Network Institute
Biography:
Peter Meisen is a 1975 graduate of UCSD in Applied Mechanics and Engineering Sciences. Drawing inspiration from renowned inventor and futurist Buckminster Fuller, he founded the Global Energy Network Institute (GENI) in 1990, a non-profit research and educational institute designed to explore global solutions for peace and sustainable development. GENI’s goal is to establish an interconnected electric grid that links the regional power systems to renewable energy resources on every continent. Former CBS News anchor Walter Cronkite called the idea “the most thoughtful strategy for peace and sustainable development” that he had ever seen. The GENI Initiative has earned the endorsement of seven Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, with Peter presenting his plan at seven World Energy Conferences.
To spur investment into green energy development, Peter helped launch the Global Climate 100 Index, designed for investors seeking climate change solutions. Index companies provide leadership in the areas of renewable energies, future fuels and clean/efficient technology. In 2011, Peter expanded this work by launching the World Resources Simulation Center (SIMCenter) to visualize sustainable solutions to global and local problems so that society makes more informed choices quicker. Some of his professional memberships include: UCSD Alumni Association, the IEEE Power Engineering Society, World Affairs Council of San Diego, Global San Diego, Union of Concerned Scientists. Peter was born in Oceanside and he and his wife Ashley reside in San Diego.
