A) Brief Details about this Program:
IEEE--PES/IAS/PELS Jt. Chapter, IEEE-Hyderabad Section, is organizing this Professional Development Program (PDP). We invite Industry Professionals, Young Professionals / Faculty in Academic Institutions / Research Scholars and PG & UG Students .
This PDP is designed to be beneficial to practicing engineers from industry/ consultants/ faculty from engineering colleges/ students / research scholars who are working/ interested in the area of Power Systems, Power Electronics, Utility Grids/ Microgrids and Battery Energy Storage Systems. Also, this PDP will create opportunities for research, better teaching and introduction of new courses in this field.
Abstract of the above PDP: Workshop :
The modern power systems are changing fast with large scale deployment of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) based power Plants using Solar PV and Wind Power. This is resulting in Micro grids which operate as stand alone type feeding a group of local loads and another type which are also connected to a large utility grid in addition to feeding the local loads. Battery based Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in combination with Bi-Directional Power Electronic Convertor are being used to mitigate the limitations of discontinuous energy supply form RES like Solar Power Plants and Wind Turbine-Generator Power Plants. All these are creating new challenges and opportunities in developing new technologies and operation of the Power systems at various levels.
Many industries / utilities and academic institutions are extensively working to solve various issues related to Utility Grids/ Microgrids/ BESS/ Bi-Directional Power Electronic Convertors. Considerable R&D work is in progress and this area and it is resulting in advanced New Products. Many of these developed products are already commercially deployed and are working energy efficiently giving reliable operation. Today, both AC or DC type Micro-grids are in operation and also under further development.
This PDP is designed to focus on creating know-how/ know-why on various aspects Utility Grids/ Microgrids including issues related to their topology/ interconnection/ grid integration, battery energy storage systems/ Bi-Directional Power Electronic Convertor technologies, local generation and power flow control.
Brief details of the Major Topics that will be covered in the above Program are as follows:

Biography:
Dr.P.V.Rajgopal is a B.Tech (EEE) graduate from NIT(REC), Warangal. He has a Ph.D. degree (in Power Electronics) from IIT-Bombay, Mumbai. He has a PGDM (Marketing) from AIMA, Delhi. He is a Senior Member of IEEE, USA. He is now the Chairman,PES/IAS/PELS Joint Chapter/IEEE-Hyderabad Section, India.
His Publications are a) Patents: 3 Nos. & b) Papers : 12 Nos.
He was Chairman/ Session on “Electric & Hybrid Vehicles”, on 8-Oct-2018, in the IEEE- International Conf. on “Asia Pacific Power& Energy Engineering Conference (APPEEC-2018)”, held 8-10, Oct-2018, in Malaysia.
He worked in BHEL, Corporate R&D at Hyderabad for more than 36 years and retired as Additional General Manager (Power Electronics Systems Group). He held many Senior level assignments in New Product Development, Innovation & Technology Development, Market Development and Human Resource Development with BHEL. He was also part of the team responsible for starting and developing the Power Electronics Systems Group in BHEL (R&D). BHEL is an organization of national & international repute manufacturing equipment for Power/ Energy/ Transmission / Industrial / Transportation Sectors in India and is a Maha-Ratna PSU in India.
As Project Leader / Group Head, he was involved in the successful development of various new products like Electric Vehicles/ AC Drives/ DC Drives/ Special Power Supplies for Transportation/ Power Plants/ Renewable Energy Systems & Industrial Applications.
He developed India’s 1st EV of Mini-Bus Type in 1982 and was used for transporting employees in their Corporate R&D Complex for many years. BHEL manufactured & sold about 1,000 Nos of the these EV Mini-Buses. Many of them were operating in many places in India, in particular around Taj Mahahal in Agra City, providing Pollution free public road transport.
Some of the major products are :
1) IGBT Based 3-Phase AC Propulsion Drive Systems and GTO & IGBT based Auxiliary Power Supply Units for Electric Locomotives / Diesel Electric Locomotives/ EMUs/
2) Battery Powered Electric Vehicles/ Fuel Cell Powered Electric Bus/
3) 1.8MW/ 6.6kV/ High Power IGBT Based Variable Speed Induction Motor Drive System for ID Fan in Thermal Power Plants/
4) Solar PV based Power Plants & Grid Connected Power Conditioner Unit (PCU) of 250kW/ 500kW/ 1MW
5) DC to AC Power Conditioners for Fuel Cell based Power Plants/
He was also the Group Head, Human Resource Development & Advanced Technical Education (HRD&ATE) Group of BHEL/ Corporate R&D Division and was responsible for training Engineers/ Supervisors/ Workmen and he proactively organized about 170 Programs in 2 years of this assignment.
He had Specialized Training at ABB’s Transportation Division – ADtranz – Switzerland
He was trained in Programming and Testing of Control Electronics (Module-1) for Power Converter for AC drives of 6000 HP Locos (WAP5/WAG 9) supplied by ABB to Indian Railways.
His areas of interest are Power Electronics Systems & Drives / Special Power Supplies for Rail Transport/ Electric Vehicles (Hybrid/ Fuel Cell /Battery Powered) and Renewable Energy Systems/ Microgrids/ Energy Storage Systems and their Applications in Utility Grids & Microgrids
He was also Project Guide for Ph.D /M.Tech / B.Tech / MBA students of various Colleges.
He was Ph.D. Guide / Supervisor to an Associate Professor of EEE Dept. in an Engineering College.
She was awarded a Ph.D degree in the faculty of “Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE)” in Aug-2016.
Her Research work was carried out in the area “Energy Management Systems for Hybrid Electric Vehicles”.
He is presently working as an Independent Consultant.
