Using Time Domain Techniques for Fast and Efficient Site VSWR Measurements (ANSI C63.25.1-2019)
Typical anechoic chambers are evaluated using the site VSWR method (for EMC chambers) or free-space VSWR method (antenna measurement chambers). In these methods, a receive antenna (probe antenna) is scanned over a distance. The standing wave in the chamber is measured, and the chamber reflectivity is derived from this measurement. This measurement can be performed alternatively by transforming the vector response in time domain (through inverse Fourier transform). In the time domain, the reflections can be separated from the antenna main responses due to their time delays. The time domain VSWR method has been incorporated into the new ANSI C63.25.1-2019 standard, which was published in March 2019. We will discuss the implementations, benefits and challenges of using this method. As a special bonus, the method will be demonstrated in an EMC test chamber being used for compliant radiated emissions measurements in the 1-18 GHz frequency range.
Biography:
Zhong Chen is the Director of RF Engineering at ETS-Lindgren, located in Cedar Park, Texas. He has over 25 years of experience in RF testing, anechoic chamber design, as well as EMC antenna and field probe design and measurements. He is the Chairman of ANSI ASC C63 Subcommittee 1 which is responsible for the antenna calibration and chamber/test site validation standards. He is chairman of the IEEE Standard 1309 committee responsible for developing calibration standards for field probes, and IEEE Standard 1128 for absorber measurements. Zhong received his M.S.E.E. degree in electromagnetics from the Ohio State University at Columbus.
