My experience as an E.S. Cornwall Scholar: Enhancing the role of national planner
Australia’s National Electricity Market is transitioning to a grid of the future with the increasing connection of asynchronous generation sources and the retirement of coal power stations. Motivated by the South Australian Black Out on the 28th September 2016 and the recommendations of the Finkel Review, Chris set out to enhance his perspective, experience and skills to be better positioned as a national transmission planner. Join Chris as he walks through his experience as an E.S. Cornwall scholar, his learnings from his time in North America and Europe, and how he hopes to contribute to the energy industry transition.

Biography:
Chris joined AEMO in 2015 as a Graduate Engineer after completing a double degree in Engineering (Electrical) and Business (Finance). Since joining AEMO, Chris has worked in market modelling, network modelling and AEMO’s Future Power System Security project. After receiving the E.S. Cornwall Memorial Scholarship in 2017, Chris joined the California ISO, Electranix and Siemens over 18 months to enhance his industry perspective, develop new transmission studies capability, learn about HVDC technical solutions and see firsthand some of the emerging challenges which Australia may face in the future. Chris is now working on the Integrated System Plan in AEMO’s System Design group which is published every two years and details a least cost optimal development pathway for the transmission system over the next 20 years.
