Dare to Dream: A talk series on Indian Women in STEM Episode1: Life and Work of Prof. Rajeswari Chatterjee
Late Prof. Rajeswari Chatterjee (1922-2010) was the first woman scientist to pioneer in the field of microwave engineering in India. She built her scientific and engineering career through many adversaries along with poor academic and research environment in British India and above all the outbreak of World War II during her entry into research. After her PhD and training in the US she returned to Independent India to join IISc Bangalore as a faculty. Her efforts to build a microwave research lab and to develop teaching programme in microwaves produced illustrious students as well as helped develop industries in post independent India. The author, Ishani Hazra, had the privilege of taking interviews of her at her Bangalore residence shortly before her demise. The life, research, other qualities of Prof. Chatterjee, and personal reminiscences of the author and our eminent speaker Prof. Prasanta Kumar Basu will be shared during this talk.

Biography:
Our honoured guest speaker for this session is Prof. Prasanta Kumar Basu (B.Sc Hons Presidency College), B. Tech, M.Tech and Ph.D. all in Radio Physics and Electronics, joined the RPE department of CU as a Lecturer in 1971. His research has been in semiconductors, he is an Alexander von Humboldt fellow and he worked as Visiting Professors in McMaster University, Canada and in TIFR. He held several administrative positions in RPE department. After his retirement from CU in 2011, he worked as a UGB BSR Faculty fellow, then as a Visiting Professor in IIT KGP, and finally as an investigator in a joint Indo Taiwan project. Since 2019, he is engaged in honorary collaborative research in RPE, and in completing his fourth book Semiconductor Nanophotonics, with co-authors, to be published by OUP, Oxford, soon.
