“INNOVATIVE SCULPTURING AND 3-D PRINTING”
Artist/Professor Davide Prete will present his work on minimal surfaces and other sculptural work created using digital design tools and additive manufacturing
Biography:
Davide Prete is an architect, artist, and art educator. He was born in Treviso, Italy, and introduced to art by his father Alessandro and by the sculptor Toni Benetton. He studied jewelry and metalsmithing at the Institute of Art in Venice and, in 2003, obtained a degree in architecture and worked as an architect for several Italian architectural firms, especially with Toni Follina Architect Studio. In 2010 he earned a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Fontbonne University in Saint Louis, where he studied under the guidance of Hank Knickmeyer and developed a personal sculptural process, mixing traditional metal casting and new technologies such as 3D printing and laser scanning. He moved to Washington, DC in 2011 and started working as a professor of fine arts after opening his art studio. He studied Digital Fabrication at FabAcademy (a MIT spinoff) and Design for Additive Manufacturing at MIT XPro.
Davide works now as an assistant professor at the University of the District of Columbia where he teaches Sculpture, Drawing, Digital tools, and Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing) for Art and Architecture. His work has been shown in both national and international venues (Italy, Germany, Czech Republic, England, France, and the USA) and showcases on the PBS documentary "Forge". His latest two big sculptural public works for the City of Washington DC are “Freedom to Read” and Soundwave Art Park.
In collaboration with Danko Arlington Foundry, professor Prete is researching a new way to infiltrate and harden green parts models, 3D printed with silica and quartz powder on the $2,000,000 3D printer Voxeljet. This research that was presented at the conference Construct 3D 2020 at Rice University will open new possibilities for large-scale 3D printing for Architecture and Art. Sculptures made with these innovative techniques were in a show at Touchstone Gallery and McLain Project for the Arts. Recently professor Prete was nominated for DC Mayor's Arts Awards 2020 and received the DC Arts and Humanities Fellowship Program Grant.
