PES WEBINAR: CCVT MODELING, FAILURE MODE INVESTIGATION AND IMPACT ON RELAY OPERATION

Abstract: The appropriate operation of substation Capacitor Coupled Voltage Transformers (CCVT) is essential for the reliable operation of the power grid. This webinar will first discuss different CCVT failure modes and related challenges on relay operation. A detailed CCVT model was built in the PSCAD/EMTDC platform to simulate and identify different failure modes of CCVT. The simulation results can be used to better understand how different failure modes affect the waveforms of voltage measurements and the relay operation. This webinar will also discuss a PMU-based substation secondary asset health monitoring and management system co-funded by DOE, AEP and EPG. The asset monitor system is designed to provide early warning and alert signals to prevent instrument transformer failure. The program was tested with simulation data, historical event data, and real-time field data in two substations at AEP.
