A Proposed Fault-Current Calculation Method for Sizing Medium-Voltage Cables
When sizing medium-voltage collection cables on a renewable energy project, it is necessary to verify the short circuit withstand of the phase and concentric shield conductors. ICEA standards P-32-382 and P-45-482 provide guidance on how to calculate these withstand values but they do not indicate what fault current should be used and whether DC offset matters. This presentation proposes a method to determine an equivalent fault current that considers DC offset for use in these calculations.
