Pre-U Stem Workshop for Students with Visual Disability-Day1
A pre-university stem workshop was organised by WIE(IEEE), Kharagpur Section Affinity Group at "Special School For The Blind", Laxmiposi; Baripada (Mayurbhanj), Odisha, India. Through this work shop we want to introduce young students with visual disability toward accessible technology which they can use in their everyday life and improve their learning through technology.
The workshop was intended for Odia high schools’ students with visual disability. Online classes and smart classes were the necessity during pandemic. With the schools slowly moving from online to offline mode; use of technology for better learning environment is always valued . On the first day of workshop the speaker interacted with students and discussed their future aspirations. It was followed by a short session on android apps for assitive technology. The speaker discussed about “Be my eyes”, “WeZoom”, “Bookshare” and similar mobile app which the student can use in their daily life. The speaker talked about accessing google pages through screen reader and talk back features in mobile and web pages. Finally, a brief introduction to scratch programming through screen reader was discussed.
Through this workshop we want to encourage and foster interactions among students with special needs to nurture their future aspirations.

Monnie Parida of IIT Kharagpur
Biography:
Ms. Monnie Parida is a PhD research scholar at the department of Advance technology and development center, IIT Kharagpur. She has academic and research experience in various engineering technologies at Infosys and IIT Kharagpur. She is an active member of WIE IEEE IIT kharagpur, Her research interests are Natural language Processing, Computational Linguistics, Disability, Human computer interaction, Machine learning.
