HIL/PIL Lecture Season at PELs Long Island

Power converters are sophisticated systems composed of multiple subsystems, including hardware and software components. System modeling is therefore an indispensable part of power electronics product development, and can serve as a powerful test bed throughout the entire development process.
The goal of this presentation is to provide insight into how a system model can be used for different types of “in-the-loop” testing. Two complementary methodologies will be explored in detail: processor-in-the-loop (PIL) and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL). Embedded code running on a Texas Instruments Delfino MCU will illustrate the advantages and disadvantages of the two approaches. Attendees will also be introduced to Plexim's RT Box real-time simulator and associated new PLECS circuit simulator features.

LECTURER: Dr. Beat Arnet, Senior Member IEEE

Beat Arnet received his Diploma and PhD in electrical engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in 1994 and 1998 respectively. He joined Solectria Corporation in Massachusetts in 1999, which subsequently became Azure Dynamics. At Azure, he led the development of electric-drive components, including traction inverters and electric machines. Since 2012, he has been with Plexim in Massachusetts where he serves as Head of Engineering and General Manager.

Dr. Arnet's main areas of interest include the modeling, design and control of inverters and electric machines, particularly for vehicular and industrial applications. He is the principal inventor of five US patents and has authored and co-authored over 15 publications.
