Feeding the Outer Mind for Critical Thinking
Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology (NMIT), Bengaluru, celebrated IEEE Day on 19th October 2024, in association with all the IEEE societies at NMIT by organizing a talk on “Feeding the Outer Mind for Critical Thinking” at 11:00 AM in Prof U R Rao Hall, NMIT Bangalore.
The event was hosted by Ms. Nandita, a student from the ECE department, who discussed the benefits of joining the IEEE organization, the activities conducted by its branches, and the importance of celebrating IEEE Day.
Ms. Nayanika, from the ECE department, warmly welcomed the chief guest, Dr. Piet Kommers from the University of Twente, Netherlands (UNESCO Learning Technologies), along with Dr. Parameshachari B.D., Professor and Head of the ECE department, other department heads, faculty advisors, student chairs of various socities , event coordinators, and Student Branch Chair Mr. Suprith Patil.
Dr. Parameshachari B.D. addressed the gathering with an insightful introduction to the world of IEEE, highlighting its mission and impact. He announced the opening of new IEEE societies at the college, bringing the total to 13 technical societies. He emphasized the importance of organizing IEEE events and ensuring they are uploaded on vTools for greater visibility and engagement. Sir also underscored the crucial role of the IEEE student branch in conducting various events and discussed the significance of leadership positions within the branch. Furthermore, he provided valuable information about available scholarships, travel grants, and the importance of applying for IEEE awards, encouraging students to actively pursue these opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Ms. Smitha Sharath Shankar from the ECE department introduced the chief guest, highlighting his notable achievements, extensive experience in the field, and his valuable contributions to both academia and industry.
Dr. Kommers delivered an insightful presentation on the role of learning in education, distinguishing between single-loop learning, which adjusts problems without questioning underlying assumptions, and double-loop learning, which challenges those fundamental beliefs. He discussed the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on education, highlighting its ability to automate grading, provide immediate feedback, and personalize learning experiences. Dr. Kommers outlined the evolution of society through various stages, emphasizing the shift from traditional education models to interactive, technology-enhanced approaches that foster critical thinking and engagement.
He also compared active and passive learning, advocating for a multimedia teaching approach to facilitate meaningful learning experiences. In his conclusion, Dr. Kommers stressed the importance of integrating play and work into the learning process to promote holistic development. During the Q&A session, he addressed the use of ChatGPT, highlighting its potential benefits while underscoring the need for responsible use of AI tools. Overall, students and faculty found the session inspiring and full of actionable insights for harnessing technology to create more inclusive and effective educational systems.
Several students provided incredible feedback on the session, praising its focus on expanding education with technology, which painted a forward-thinking yet balanced vision for the future of education. The session was inspiring for faculty advisors and students, offering actionable insights into how we can harness technology to create more inclusive, innovative, and effective educational systems.
Dr. Piet Kommers was felicitated by Dr. HC Nagaraj (Principal of NMIT), Dr. Parameshachari B.D. (Head of Department, ECE), Dr. Karunakara Rai B. (Professor), Dr. Shashidhar K.S. (Associate Professor), Mr. Pradeep Kumar S. (Assistant Professor), and Ms. Smitha Sharath Shankar (Assistant Professor). They presented him with a shawl, symbolizing warmth, respect, and honor, along with a token of appreciation, a memento, and a bouquet as gestures of gratitude. The celebration concluded with the chief guest, Dr. Piet Kommers, cutting a cake to mark IEEE Day, making the event a grand success.

Dr. Piet Kommers
Feeding the Outer Mind for Critical Thinking
Biography:
Dr. Piet Kommers is a pioneer in media for cognitive and social support, with doctoral research focused on hypertext and concept mapping in learning. Since 1982, he has developed educational technology as an engineering approach to teaching and learning, advocating that technology drives human ambition and awareness. As an associate professor at the University of Twente, he has taught over 15 courses and supervised more than 30 PhD students. Dr. Kommers coordinated the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Cognitive Technologies and led European research projects in multimedia, web-based learning, social media, and virtual worlds. He has received honors such as UNESCO Honorary Professor for his work in Eastern Europe and an Honorary Doctorate from Capital Normal University in Beijing. He serves on advisory boards in Singapore, Finland, and Russia, and has delivered over 40 keynote lectures at major international conferences. His publications focus on how new media transform social and intellectual dynamics, encouraging deeper reflection on human nature and societal change.
